WELCOME TO THE RUNNIN’ P’s -10 steps to help you achieve your God-Given Dream

Even though it’s been years ago, I can still remember being 12, 13 or 14 years old and having a dream in my heart.  I wanted to be a world champion like my dad.  My dad was a saddle bronc rider, and my love was football and calf roping.  I can still remember vividly how far out in the universe it seemed to dream to be a champion.  When I was 14 the cattle market crashed and my folks lost everything.  They divorced shortly after that; and it was a challenging time for the whole family.
The message Bible says in 1 Cor. 10:13 – no test or temptation that comes your way is beyond the course of what others have had to face – but God is faithful, He will not let you be tempted beyond your ability and He will also provide a way out…
No one is exempt from challenges.  Everyone who pushes forward with their dream will experience resistance. Welcome to the Runnin” P’s.  10 principles that will help you achieve your God-given dream.  I pray that the Runnin’ P’s send a tail wind of encouragement, wisdom and faith to your life.

I Cor. 9:24 (living) “ In a race everyone runs but only one person gets first prize.  So run your race to win.”

You are His champion and your life was meant to make a
difference in this world!

GO FOR IT!!

God Bless,
Jeff Copenhaver

PERSONAL

For as long as I can remember I have loved the sports world- -rodeo, football, basketball, baseball, golf and many others.  In all these sports there are heroes that you look up to – you want to become just like them.  Isn’t it something that we can follow the careers of these superstars and know so many things about them and yet never know them personally?  Michael Jordan is one of my heroes yet I’ve never shook his hand or had a conversation with him.  I don’t know what it’s like to go golfing or fishing with him or eat lunch with him.  I have no idea what his personal likes or dislikes are, or what any of his goals or dreams are.
Knowing the Lord can be exactly the same.  In the Bible belt (the south) where I live, it seems that almost everyone has been around church or the gospel in one form or another.  If you didn’t know better, you would think almost everyone was a Christian, however knowing about something and actually knowing it can be as far apart as the East is from the West.  A friend of mine wrote a song titled, “If a cat has kittens in an oven, you don’t call them biscuits.

Romans 10:9-10 (amp)  “…if you acknowledge and confess with your lips that Jesus is Lord, and in your heart believe that God raised Him from the dead, you will be saved.  For with the heart a person believes and is justified, and with the mouth he confesses his salvation.”

There can be a distinct difference between religion and personal relationship.  The religious people of Jesus’ day are the ones who crucified Him.  I talked to a man in Shamrock, Texas who told me he taught Sunday morning Bible study for 50 years, that’s right – 50 years and guess what?  He didn’t know Jesus personally.  He studied for all those years about the Lord, but he had never truly opened up his heart and asked Jesus to come in.
In 1978 my wife and I knelt down at the foot of our bed and asked Jesus to come into our hearts.  We had been searching for a long time.  When we asked Him to forgive us of our sins and come into our hearts we could sense His presence and we knew our lives had changed and a personal relationship had begun!  To know Jesus is to begin an incredible journey here on earth that continues on into heaven when we die.  The Holy Spirit begins to use the Bible (as we read it) to change us into the likeness of our Lord.  He takes us into His champion training.  At the same time it is the beginning of the most wonderful love affair.  Ephesians talks about Jesus being the bridegroom and all His kids (us) being His bride.  Most people have heard of
John 3:16 (kj)  "For God so loved the world that He gave his only begotten Son, so that whosoever believes in Him shall not perish but have everlasting life."
He loved us first and when we receive Him, we’re saying I Do to a personal relationship.
God’s love for you is extreme; it’s radical, it’s eternal and it’s more wonderful than any love you can ever know.  He came to fight for you; to fight for your love.  All the obstacles He confronted and overcame on this earth were for one thing:  YOUR LOVE.  That’s it!
Step 1 on your journey and your quest for God-success is personal.

PERSONAL

PRAY THIS PRAYER

Lord I confess my sins.  Thank you for shedding your blood for me that I could be eternally forgiven.
Jesus, come into my heart and be my savior and my Lord.  In Jesus’ name I pray.      Amen

Phil 3:8, 10 (amp) "Yes, furthermore, I count everything as loss compared to the possession of the priceless privilege of knowing Christ my Lord." For his sake I have lost everything and consider it to be mere rubbish in order that I may win Christ.  (10)  For I am determined that I may become more deeply and intimately acquainted with Him, . . ."

 PURPOSE – OUR GOD-GIVEN DREAM

Purpose = “with a specific end in view. By design”

A few years ago a phenomenon hit America in the form of a book called “The Purpose Driven Life.”  Just the title alone says it – a life that is driven, motivated, inspired and meaningful because of purpose.  The first definition of the word purpose in Webster’s dictionary is “to aim.”  God has put in all His creation their purpose.  It gives our life something to aim at.  Without a bulls eye to aim at, we can wander through our lives like the song “What’s it all About Alphie?”  The great golf teacher Harvey Penick would say “Take dead aim.”  How true – discover your God given purpose or dream and take dead aim.
Many people (especially men) have run from God because they believe that if they gave their lives to the Lord that He would take the fun out of life.   But that couldn’t be further from the truth!  Embracing your God-purpose, your God given dream is to launch out on an incredible adventure. It is a courageous journey that no man or woman could make without holding the Lord’s hand through it all!
Emmitt Smith, pro football’s all time rushing leader cried the other day when they told him he was selected to Pro Football’s Hall of Fame.  Why?  He said it was the dream that had been in his heart for so long, and he knew it was God’s purpose fulfilled for his life.  He wept for joy!  Truly the Lord has a wonderful unique purpose for each of our lives.
Search it out and GO FOR IT!

PERSONAL – PURPOSE

Romans 8:28 (kj) “For we know that all things work together for good to those who love God and are called according to His purpose.”

Prov. 19:21 (niv)” Many are the plans in a man’s heart but it is the Lord’s purpose that prevails.”

I Cor. 9:26 (nlt )” Run with a purpose in every step.”

PASSION

Passion = “extreme, compelling emotion; intense emotional drive
or excitement; the object of any strong desire”

As I write this article on passion, it is January of 2010 and the Dallas Cowboys football team is going into the first round of the playoffs.  Only the future can tell how far they will go but something has changed radically from last year’s team.  Recently ESPN showed one of the Cowboy players pumping up his fellow teammates.  I had never seen professionals respond with such frenzy and passion.  They were all going absolutely nuts!  I thought, “man they have come alive – completely alive!"  In a pro sports world full of steroids, multi-millionaire life-styles, and lots of hot dogging (the “it’s all about me syndrome”), I honestly doubted that there could be an entire team willing to lay their lives down for each other in a cause to win.  Now, that’s the kind of sports example that inspires us to live our lives the same way.
As a young boy I would come home from school and tie a calf on the ground for hours.  When I was 25 I roped 10,000 calves in a 3 month period.  Why?  I had a passion on the inside of me to do the impossible – to be a champion.  Once you’ve discovered your passion, release the passion – don’t be normal - don’t be hindered – release it!
Let me ask you a question.  What burns in your heart?  What fire of desire flame do you have on the inside of you that simply can’t be put out?  One time the Lord spoke in my heart, “the desire that I’ve given you is the fire of my presence on the inside of you cheering you on!”
God wants us to love Him with all our might then release that same passion for what He’s called us to do!

PERSONAL – PURPOSE – PASSION
Eccl. 9:10 (amp): “ Whatsoever your hand finds to do, do it with all your might; for there is no work or knowledge or wisdom in the grave where you are going.”

Luke 10:27 (amp) –“And he replied, you must love the Lord your God with all your heart, and with all your soul, and with all your strength, and with all your mind; and your neighbor as yourself.”

Col.3:23 (Holman) “Whatever you do, do it enthusiastically as something done for the Lord and not for men.

PLAN

Plan = “a program for making, doing or arranging something”

Look at this scripture in Proverbs 16:3 (Amp):

“Roll your works upon the Lord, commit and trust them wholly to Him.  He shall cause your thoughts to become agreeable to His will and so shall your plans be established and succeed.”

This is one of my favorite scriptures.  Think about it, if we really roll our works (goals, dreams, etc.) on the Lord, we will then begin to have thoughts that are from God which are God’s will for our life.  Then the plans we make will succeed.  What a deal!  We all want to succeed or win, don’t we?  A friend of mine was always saying “we don’t plan to fail, we fail to plan.” Without the right plans, we are deceiving ourselves.  We will end up discouraged and defeated and probably afraid to even mention the word goal.  The right, realistic, well thought out, effective plan will make your goal begin to be a reality.
In March of 2006 I went to Salina, Kansas to put on a calf roping school.  A blizzard hit one day and I remember how cold it was inside the indoor arena as I told them this: Calf roping is like a 10,000 piece puzzle.  As I said this part of me got as depressed as the students in response to this statement.  I don’t know about you but there’s no way that I would ever put a 10,000 piece puzzle together.  But on the upside, I told them the scripture in Zechariah 4:10 – “despise not the day of small beginnings.”  It takes a world of desire and great humility to begin an incredibly long journey- but isn’t that what life’s about?  A purpose, a long journey, but victory ahead if we don’t quit!  As time went by I kept tutoring some of those students in Kansas. Because of their many calf roping questions,  I began to put a syllabus together.  I call it Peak Performance – The plan.  It is primarily an outline to fill in the pieces.  Here is some of it – Equipment, horsemanship, horses, flanking, tying, practice, rodeoing, match ropings, goals, travel, fitness the mental game, etc.  Each of these categories is broken into many more categories.  Lots of pieces to the puzzle.  A little update for you – I’m still working with several of the students from Kansas.  They’ve come a long way baby.  They’ve got a plan and they are working it!  Did you know that you are only as good as your weakest link?  The right plan eliminates the weak areas.  A detailed plan puts wheels on your little red wagon.  Yes, you have a purpose or dream, and the passion that comes with it, but until you get a real plan, you haven’t mobilized it.

PERSONAL – PURPOSE – PASSION – PLAN

Hab. 2:2 (amp)  “Write the vision upon tablets and make it plain (detailed) so that everyone who passes may be able to read it easily as he hastens by.”

Prov. 24:3 (living) “Any enterprise is built by wise planning, become strong through common sense, and profits wonderfully by keeping abreast of the facts.”

PEOPLE – THE DREAM TEAM

From the time we are born, we are dependent on others to help us be shaped into the people we would hope to become.  Even the most independent person is dependent upon so many people for success.  People bring confirmation, wisdom, creativity, encouragement and almost everything else!  Here’s a progression:   The Purpose,  the Passion,  the Plan, and the People.

When people see your passion for your dream, and that you are launched out on a plan, they will be drawn to you to help you.  Always be sure that you are thankfully gracious to those that God brings to help you.  Return your care and love to them.
I Corinthians Chapter twelve talks about the body of Christ.  It compares all of us in God’s family to all the parts of the human body.  Think about it.  We have arms and legs, eyes and ears, toes and fingers, wrists and ankles, knees and elbows, all these visible exterior parts plus way more invisible parts on the inside that we can’t see.  Wouldn’t it be a short life if we were only a nose – no heart to pump blood, no lungs to draw in air, no nothing – something for the dog to play with?  Now that may sound a little gross, but we can be in the same pickle if we aren’t part of God’s community of people.  The local church, special Christian friends and key people that can mentor and train you in all aspects of your life and God-given dream.  For example,  in tie down or breakaway calf roping you will need a roping coach or coaches.  Coaches would be better because some coach’s strong points will be handling the lariat rope or becoming a good horseman while another is ground work – flanking and tying.  Someone else is expert in fitness and nutrition while another is strong in the mental aspect of winning or the preparation and practice to win.  Some of these coaches you may never meet personally, but you will read their books or watch their DVDs.  Nevertheless you need all the God-given people in your life to fill all the gaps.
One time the Lord spoke in my heart, “you’re only as good as your weakest link.” God wants to use people to help you with the weaknesses in your life so that they will become strengths.  I mentioned earlier that the year before I won the world championship, I went to Seaside, Oregon and roped 10,000 calves in 3 ½ months.  105 calves per day. .  By the way, a friend of mine let me use his calves, his indoor and outdoor arena and provided chute help for me to be able to practice.  This was a perfect example of the need for an entire team to accomplish something.  Many Christians don’t realize how critical it is for them to be part of a local church.  Spiritual leaders to teach you His word, pray for you and mentor you spiritually.  God wants you fully equipped and prepared for what He’s put in your heart to do.  The fulfillment of your dream will take people.  Scripture makes it plain that we should not forsake the assembling of ourselves together. We need to understand that He designed the local church not only for the building up of the body of Christ corporately but to encourage and build your personal God-given dream.
PERSONAL – PURPOSE – PASSION – PLAN – PEOPLE

I Cor 12:18-19 (Holman) “ …but now God has placed the parts, each one of them in the body just as he wanted.  (19) And if they were all the same part, where would the body be?  Now there are many parts, yet one body”   (Dream team)

PURSUE

Well Nike probably said it best - - JUST DO IT!
You can have the dream or purpose, the passion that goes with it, the plan to prepare you and launch you out, the people to help (dream team), but then you’ve got to do it – it’s time to pursue!   You know you can think about something, you can want to do something or you can DO something.   Faith moves – it pursues.
Our special friends the Boskes in Australia were quite the rowdy bunch before they met Jesus.  The true story goes that one of their friends was severely injured when a motorcycle gang member hit him over the head with a whiskey bottle.  Word got back to the Boske brothers (4 of them) and off they went to help their friend.  When they arrived they found out there were approximately 25 members in the motorcycle gang, and they were camped out along the ocean in a little town on the coast of Queensland.  As they approached the motorcycle gang with intentions to get revenge for their friend; all they had in their hands was some hockey sticks that they found in a hardware store.
In order to appreciate the story, you have to know these guys are built like human grizzly bears and probably had close to the same temperament.  Peter asks his younger brother David, “hey mate, we need to get a plan.”  David keeps walking not saying anything and finally he responds, “charge em.”  Well they got a plan, “charge.”  Long story short, the next day the local police wanted to jail the brothers because they had hospitalized 11 gang members and injured the rest.  One guy was on the end of a tree hanging over a huge cliff overlooking the ocean.  The problem with putting them in jail was that everyone was glad the gang got it and who would believe that 4 guys did all this anyway.
Did you know that there is such a thing as overtraining?  You can become a professional practicer.  All dressed up but going nowhere.  Why would you rent the tuxedo and not go to the dance?  I’ve signed most all the articles I’ve written through the years with 3 words – “Go For It”  Pursue means to Go For It! You can do it, you’re the best Gods got, you are His champion – He loves you so much! Grab a hockey stick now and charge!!!

PERSONAL – PURPOSE – PASSION – PLAN – PEOPLE - PURSUE

James 2:17 (amp):  So also faith if it does not have works (deeds and actions of obedience to back it up), by itself is destitute of power – inoperative, dead.

PERSIST

Persist = “refuse to give up, especially when faced with opposition or difficulty”

Three times in 1975, I wanted to quit so bad I could taste it.  The first time was at the building rodeos.  I was getting short of money and couldn’t draw a decent enough calf to win.  The pressure was on, then I won second at Houston and I was off and running.  Right before the Fourth of July, I was in Williams Lake, B.C. and was so exhausted (after four days of no sleep) that I told my hauling partner; “It’s over, we’re not going anywhere, we’re staying right here in Williams Lake.”
My partner told me to shut up and get in the camper and go to sleep while he drove all night to Bassano, Alberta.  I slept for 27 straight hours and won the next three rodeos.
The third time I wanted to quit was at Cheyenne, I went into the short go round almost three seconds ahead of the second place roper.  I chased my calf down the left side of the arena and he ran into the camera pit fence on the left and laid there shaking.  I didn’t know what to do, watching that calf laying there on the ground.  Finally the flagger flagged me out – No time.  I can’t describe how discouraging that really was.
The next day I drove all the way to Great Falls, Montana by myself.  It had rained about four inches and there was a foot of mud in the arena.  I made possibly my very best run of the year.  I was 9.8 – first place and back on track.
One time as I was studying God’s Word, the Holy Spirit spoke in my heart the crucial point:  As we are on our journey with God or pursuing a life goal, we have defining moments that determine whether we continue by faith or quit.  I looked up the word crucial in the dictionary; it comes from the root word crux or cross – “as if bringing to the cross”.  The other thing that the Lord spoke in my heart was this – the crucial point is when the enemy tells you that “this isn’t working” and it’s not going to work”.
Here’s our chance to win or lose.  We must bring it to the cross!  How do we do that?  We get a promise from God’s Word and we continue to stand on that promise.  Also, we spend time seeking Him in prayer, fasting and praising Him.  We establish that He is our strength.  He is the might and power to get the job done. This will dispel the attack – the urge to quit!
Push forward champion – victory is on down the road.  This may be the most defining quality of a champion.  What really separates ordinary people from champions?  When the challenges, difficulties, discouragements, disappointments and obstacles of every kind hit their lives, they get up, get back in the race, and go forward.  Tenacity, bulldog tenacity!  I believe a champion is an ordinary person who refuses to quit.  One more prayer, one more step, one more day, one more chance.  Champions press on – ONE MORE TIME!

Remember – When you’re tempted with everything in you to quit,
bring it to the cross and see the victory come.

Heb. 10:38 (kj) “Now the just shall live by faith, but it anyone draws back, my soul has no pleasure in him.”

Gal. 6:9 (rs)  “And let us not grow weary while doing good,  for in due season we shall reap if we do not lose heart.”

James 1:2-3 (amp) “Consider it wholly joyful, my brethren, whenever you are enveloped in or encounter trials of any sort or fall into various temptations.  Be assured and understand that the trial and proving of  your faith brings out endurance and steadfastness and patience.”

PRIZE

Prize = “anything worth striving for, something offered or given”

Someone asked a calf roper friend of mine one time how he’d been doing?
(which meant – have you been winning?)  My friend said, “I’m like the mouse caught in the trap – I don’t want the cheese anymore, I just want out of the trap.”  He was half joking – half serious.  While we’re going through challenges and faced with giants, we have to make sure we keep our eyes on the prize.  Warning: if you don’t want the cheese but just want out of the trap, your dream train has run off the tracks.

Heb 12:2 (kj) “Looking unto Jesus the author and finisher of our faith; who for the joy that was set before Him endured the cross, despising the shame, and is set down at the right hand of the throne of God.”

This word looking in Hebrews has a two-part meaning.  The first meaning is to look away from all that distracts; and the second part means to focus totally on what you are looking at. Keeping your eyes on the prize means to continue to make the quality choice of not focusing on the problems, difficulties or challenges, but keeping your eyes on the prize – looking unto Jesus…
As Christians, we ultimately have one prize and that is Jesus Christ Himself.  The Bible says we are married to Him, and He is our reward in this world and for eternity.  However, because He is our prize, what He has put in our heart now takes on a much bigger dimension. Your God-given dream being fulfilled is all about Him being glorified.  So when the giant is roaring at you, telling you “who do you think you are to think you can accomplish your dream?” – that’s when you’ve got to stay on track and keep on keeping your eyes on the Prize.

PERSONAL – PURPOSE – PASSION – PLAN – PEOPLE

GO FOR IT CHAMPION

I Cor 9:25 (niv) “Everyone who competes in the games goes into strict training.  They do it to get a crown (prize) that will not last; but we do it to get a crown that will last forever.

Phil 3:14 (amp) “I press on toward the goal to win the supreme and heavenly prize to which God in Christ Jesus is calling us upward.”

PLATFORM

Platform = a statement of principles

In the 80’s, I was having month-long calf roping schools.  Every day five students and I would go to lunch at the local BBQ restaurant.   We were really excited one particular day because one of football’s great players was getting inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame, and this man was a confessing Christian.  I had been talking to the guys about preparing and planning for the day and the days ahead when they would get opportunities to share their faith.   So as we watched the TV that day, we were hanging on every word this man had to say.  He hadn’t said anything about the Lord or his faith, and as he came to the end he said, and I quote, “…and finally I would like to thank (and he looked up) and thanked the owner of the team,” and that was it, it was over!  What an incredible world-changing platform opportunity he was handed! All those completed passes for all those years and now instead of honoring and acknowledging his love for the Lord, he threw an interception. The devil intimidated him into saying nothing!
In the story of David and Goliath, David came to the battle and was ready to fight the giant.  He said, “is there not a cause?”  Later in that chapter he stated what his cause was – “that all the world may know there is a God in Israel.”  Our cause is to let HIM be known to the whole world.  Get ready now; tell your friends, family, schoolmates, and co-workers about the most wonderful eternal friend you’ve come to know.  Practice now for your platform.  Two awesome examples in sports today are Tim Tebow and Colt Mc Coy.  The two winningest quarterbacks in modern day college football, and they are committed vocal Christians.  They are using their platform to the fullest.
Below is the last paragraph of super bowl champion coach Tony Dungy’s book titled Quiet Strength, he writes:

“It’s been a year since I finished Quiet Strength.  The same thoughts that prompted me to write this book in the first place still are prominent in my mind: we are all role models, and we all can and should have a positive impact on someone’s life.  God has placed each of us where we are for a reason: within our spheres of influence at work, in our neighborhoods, in our families.  He wants us to touch lives wherever He leads us.”
“Whether you are a friend to a bullied boy in middle school, a ray of light in your neighborhood book club, a supportive coach for a high school team, an available shoulder to someone at a time of loss, or a hand held out to a child looking for a little hope, we all can change the course of our nation and world, one life at a time, for the rest of our lives.”

CHAMPION, SPEAK FROM YOUR PLATFORM!

Psa 71:18 (amp) “Yes, even when I am old and gray-headed, O God, forsake me not, until I have declared Your mighty strength to this generation, and your might and power to all that are to come.”

Neh 8:5 (living)  “…your platform will be in full view of all the people.”

“PRAISE”

PRAISE = to acclaim strong approval as by loud applause

God knew you when you were in your Mother’s womb.  Like the wonderful loving heavenly father that He is, He has put gifts and talents in you with unique desires to go along with them.  As you step out in faith, He puts a dream in your heart and then He promises to be there with you to bring it to pass.  He created the glorious heavens, the majestic mountains and the awesome oceans, lakes and rivers for our enjoyment; just because He loves us so much.  He planned the love that men and women would have for each other.  He created the diversity of animals that cover the planet.  Every size, shape, color and disposition.  He reveals His love, His sense of humor, His creativity and His glory through His creation. In 1 Tim 6:17 it says He gave us all these things richly to enjoy!  Now if that wasn’t enough, Romans 8:32 says:
He that spared not His own son, but delivered Him up for us all, how shall He not with Him
freely give us all things.
He gave us His only son Jesus.  All He’s asking us is to show our love, acceptance, and appreciation by receiving and praising Jesus, the free gift of salvation.  Not only has the Lord blessed us on earth in this lifetime, but He has prepared for us a glorious existence in heaven for eternity.
I met an older gentleman the other day who was 76 years old – and building a new house by himself.  We got to visiting and he said he died in a car wreck and went to heaven, and then came back.   He said the peace and feeling of awesome love in heaven was like recalling the most wonderful moment in your life, when you felt completely loved; and then multiplying it by one million. Then you might be getting close to what heaven is like!  Our thanks to Him and our praise and worshipping Him down here is just a tiny warmup for eternity.  As we grow in faith and spiritual maturity, our praise to Him will be like a river that flows fuller, faster, and farther than we could have ever imagined!
I referred to Florida quarterback Tim Tebow and Texas quarterback Colt McCoy earlier.  Each of these players played their last college football game recently.  Tim Tebow played an incredible almost flawless game as Florida defeated undefeated Cincinnati.  After the game Tim thanked the Lord and praised Him first of all.
Colt Mc Coy and Texas were playing Alabama for the national championship.  Colt had been preparing for this his entire lifetime.  I’m sure you already know the story.  The 3rd play of the game he is tackled, injured and out of the game - period.  Not surprisingly, Texas lost after a valiant team effort with a freshman quarterback. Colt was asked after the game what he felt like. He first of all couldn’t say anything because of the unimaginable disappointment.  Then he said, ` “I’m not going to question God, I’m not asking why – I’m still on the rock!”  How about that statement?  Here are two Christians in two totally opposite scenarios, yet both of them living their lives to His praise.  In the movie – Facing the Giants, one of their sayings was: “when we win we praise Him, when we lose, we praise Him – that’s what it’s all about.”
